How Modern Nissans Are Built
Rogue: Aluminum Panels and Advanced Steel
When Nissan redesigned the Rogue for 2021, it reworked the materials to reduce weight while improving strength:
- Aluminum hood, front fenders and doors
- A resin (plastic) liftgate and fuel filler door
- Advanced high-strength steel making up about 35 percent of the body structure, up from about 13 percent on the previous Rogue, including 980 and 1,180 MPa grades in areas like the B-pillar and crossmembers
What that means for collision repair: aluminum panels need dedicated tools to prevent steel contamination, which can cause corrosion in Florida humidity. Resin liftgates are repaired and refinished differently than steel ones. And advanced high-strength steels usually can't be heated or straightened outside Nissan's procedures, which specify where parts may be sectioned or must be replaced.
Altima, Sentra and Other Unibody Cars
Nissan has steadily increased its use of ultra-high-strength steel across its car lineup, especially in pillars, roof rails and rocker areas. These strong steels protect occupants, but they make following factory repair procedures essential. Our frame straightening process uses frame machines and computer-assisted measuring to restore factory dimensions.
Frontier, Titan and Armada
These are body-on-frame vehicles. A rear-end hit while towing or a hard off-road strike can shift a frame rail even when the body looks fine. Watch for the signs of frame damage, like uneven gaps or a truck that pulls to one side.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 and ProPILOT Assist
Many newer Nissans come with Nissan Safety Shield 360, and some offer ProPILOT Assist. Depending on model and year, you may have:
- Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
- Rear Automatic Braking
- Lane Departure Warning and Lane Intervention
- Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert
- Intelligent Around View Monitor
- Intelligent Cruise Control and ProPILOT Assist
These features rely on a windshield camera, radar sensors behind the front fascia and rear bumper, sonar sensors, and cameras in the grille, mirrors and liftgate. After a collision repair, ask your estimator how your vehicle's systems will be verified. Learn more in ADAS sensors after a collision.
Electric Nissans
The LEAF and Ariya carry large high-voltage battery packs. EV repairs involve specific safety steps, including planning around heat from welding and paint curing. We repair all makes and models, including electric vehicles.
OEM Parts Whenever Possible
We use OEM parts whenever possible on Nissan repairs. Bumper covers, grilles and mirrors often hold sensors and cameras, and correct-fit parts help those systems work as designed. For more, read OEM vs. aftermarket parts. If your insurer is handling the claim, our insurance claim help can make the process easier.

Frequently asked questions
Are the panels on my Nissan Rogue aluminum?
On the third-generation Rogue that launched for 2021, the hood, front fenders and doors are aluminum, and the liftgate is resin. Aluminum needs dedicated tools to avoid contamination and corrosion, and some damaged aluminum panels are replaced instead of repaired.
Do I need a Nissan dealer for collision repair?
Generally, no. As the owner you can tell your insurer where you want the car repaired, and most major insurers say you can use any shop. Firkins Collision Center repairs all makes and models, including Nissan, and uses OEM parts whenever possible.
Should Nissan Safety Shield 360 be checked after a repair?
Yes, it's a good idea. Safety Shield 360 and ProPILOT Assist use a windshield camera, front radar and rear sensors. Ask your estimator how your vehicle's systems will be verified after repairs.
Can you repair a Nissan LEAF or Ariya?
We repair all makes and models, including electric vehicles. EVs involve specific safety steps around the high-voltage battery, and your estimator can explain how your vehicle will be handled.
Will you use genuine Nissan parts?
We use OEM parts whenever possible, and your estimate lists the parts planned. If your insurer specifies non-OEM parts, we can explain the differences and your options.
