How Modern Kias Are Built
Heavy Use of Advanced High-Strength Steel
Like its sister brand Hyundai, Kia builds its vehicles around large amounts of advanced high-strength steel (AHSS). When Kia launched the Telluride for 2020, it described the body as about 59 percent AHSS and said the main structure doesn't use aluminum. Smaller Kias follow the same approach: Kia said the 2019 Forte was about 54 percent AHSS and the 2021 Seltos about 61 percent, and newer models add hot-stamped parts in the pillars and roof rails.
What that means for collision repair:
- Advanced and hot-stamped steels usually can't be heated or straightened the way older mild steel could.
- Kia's repair procedures specify where parts may be sectioned, which must be replaced and how they must be joined.
- Accurate measuring is essential to confirm the structure is back to factory dimensions. Our frame straightening process uses frame machines and computer-assisted measuring to do just that.
Carnival and Telluride: Big Family Vehicles
The Carnival's power sliding doors rely on tracks, rollers, latches and wiring that all need precise alignment after a side impact. The Telluride's large rear liftgate, rear sensors and camera often all get involved in a rear-end hit. See rear-end collision repair.
Kia Drive Wise and Driver-Assist Features
Many newer Kias come with Kia Drive Wise driver-assist technologies. Depending on model and trim, they may include:
- Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
- Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Following Assist
- Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist and Blind-Spot View Monitor
- Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
- Smart Cruise Control and Highway Driving Assist
- Rear Occupant Alert and parking distance warning
These systems rely on a camera at the top of the windshield, front radar, rear-corner radar and ultrasonic sensors in the bumpers. Even a light bumper hit can shift a sensor or bracket. After a collision repair, ask your estimator how your vehicle's systems will be verified. Learn more in ADAS sensors after a collision.
Hybrids and EVs
Kia's electrified lineup includes the Niro, Sportage Hybrid, Sorento Hybrid, EV6 and EV9. These vehicles carry high-voltage batteries and cabling, which add specific safety steps and planning to the repair process. We repair all makes and models, including Kia hybrids and EVs.
OEM Parts Whenever Possible
We use OEM parts whenever possible on Kia repairs. Grilles, bumper covers and lighting on newer Kias often integrate sensors and distinctive designs, and correct-fit parts help everything look and work as intended. Read OEM vs. aftermarket parts, and if you're working through a claim, see our insurance claims page.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to take my Kia to a Kia dealer for collision repair?
Generally, no. As the owner you can tell your insurer where you want the car repaired, and most major insurers say you can use any shop. Firkins Collision Center repairs all makes and models, including Kia, and uses OEM parts whenever possible.
What is the Kia Telluride body made of?
When Kia introduced the Telluride for 2020, it said about 59 percent of the body was advanced high-strength steel, with no aluminum in the main structure. Those steels make careful, procedure-based structural repair important.
Should my Kia's Drive Wise features be checked after a repair?
Yes, it's a good idea. Kia Drive Wise features use a windshield camera, front radar, rear-corner radar and parking sensors. Ask your estimator how your vehicle's systems will be verified after repairs are complete.
Can you repair a Kia EV6 or EV9?
We repair all makes and models, including electric vehicles. EVs have large high-voltage battery packs that add specific safety steps to the repair, and your estimator can explain how your vehicle will be handled.
How long will my Kia be in the shop?
Minor repairs often take a few days, while significant damage can take several weeks depending on the extent of the damage and parts availability. We provide progress updates throughout and can help arrange a loaner or rental.
