How Ford Trucks Are Built

The F-150's Aluminum Body

Starting with the 2015 model year, Ford switched the F-150's cab and bed to a high-strength, military-grade aluminum alloy, while keeping a fully boxed high-strength steel frame underneath. Later generations stayed with that design.

What that means for collision repair:

  • Aluminum needs dedicated tools and work areas. Steel dust and steel tools can contaminate aluminum and lead to galvanic corrosion, especially in Florida's humid, salty air.
  • Aluminum doesn't behave like steel. It has less "memory," so it doesn't spring back in the same way. Some dents are repaired, and some panels are replaced.
  • Joining is different. Many aluminum repairs use rivets and structural adhesives per the manufacturer's procedures rather than traditional welding.

Our frame straightening work uses frame machines and computer-assisted measuring to check the steel frame against factory dimensions, since a hit that dents the aluminum body can also shift the frame underneath.

Super Duty, Ranger and Bronco

The Super Duty also uses aluminum body panels over a steel frame. The Bronco uses aluminum for several exterior panels, including the doors and hood, over a steel frame. Like a Jeep Wrangler, its removable doors and roof panels bring hinges, seals and latches that must line up again after a hit. The Ranger is body-on-frame with aluminum used for some panels such as the hood.

Unibody Fords: Maverick, Escape, Explorer and Mustang

The Maverick, Escape, Bronco Sport, Explorer and Mustang are unibody vehicles, where the body shell is the structure. These use high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels in pillars, rockers and rails. Those steels often can't be heated or straightened, and the manufacturer's procedures specify where sectioning is allowed. See signs of frame damage for warning signs.

Ford Co-Pilot360 and Other Safety Systems

Many newer Fords come with Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assist features. Depending on the model, those may include:

  • Pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane-keeping system
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with cross-traffic alert
  • Pro Trailer Backup Assist and 360-degree cameras on trucks
  • Hands-free BlueCruise on equipped models

These features rely on radar behind the grille or bumper, cameras in the windshield, and sensors in the rear bumper corners and mirrors. After collision repair, ask your estimator how your vehicle's systems will be verified. Our article on ADAS sensors after a collision explains why it matters.

Hybrids and EVs

The F-150 PowerBoost hybrid, F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, Escape Hybrid and Maverick Hybrid all carry high-voltage systems. These vehicles involve additional safety steps during repair. Ask your estimator how your vehicle will be handled.

OEM Parts Whenever Possible

We use OEM parts whenever possible on Ford repairs. With multiple grilles, lighting packages and trim levels on most Ford trucks and SUVs, getting the exact right part matters for fit and for sensor function. If your insurance estimate lists aftermarket parts, see OEM vs. aftermarket parts and remember you can always ask questions about your insurance claim.

Aluminum and Florida's Salt Air

Aluminum doesn't rust the way steel does, but it can corrode where it touches steel or when steel particles get embedded during a careless repair. Near the water in Cortez, Palmetto or on Anna Maria Island, salt air speeds that process up. Proper isolation, coatings and corrosion protection during the repair help your F-150 or Super Duty body hold up for years. Read more about salt air and sun damage.

Frequently asked questions

Can you repair the aluminum body on my Ford F-150?

Since the 2015 model year, the F-150 body and bed have been made mostly of aluminum alloy mounted on a high-strength steel frame. Aluminum calls for dedicated tools and handling to avoid contamination and corrosion, and some damage is replaced rather than repaired. Ask your estimator to walk you through how your truck's panels will be handled.

Do I have to take my Ford to a Ford dealer for collision repair?

No. In Florida you have the right to choose your own body shop. Firkins Collision Center repairs all makes and models, including Ford, and uses OEM parts whenever possible.

Will you use genuine Ford parts?

We use OEM parts whenever possible. Your estimate lists exactly which parts are planned, and if your insurer specifies non-OEM parts, we can explain your options.

My Explorer has a lot of sensors. Do they need to be checked after a repair?

Many Fords with Ford Co-Pilot360 features use front radar, a windshield camera, blind-spot radar and parking sensors. After a collision repair, ask your estimator how your vehicle's systems will be verified so you know they're working as designed.

Is the Ford Maverick body aluminum like the F-150?

No. The Maverick is a unibody pickup built mostly from steel, with a high-strength steel structure and an aluminum hood. That's a very different construction from the body-on-frame, aluminum-bodied F-150.
