Cortez Auto Body Repair Near the Fishing Village
Collision and paint repair for Cortez and the Cortez Road corridor, a straight shot east to our 1st Street shop, with pickup, loaners and 24/7 towing.
Cortez is one of the last working fishing villages on Florida's Gulf Coast, tucked along Sarasota Bay at the west end of Cortez Road. It's a place of fish houses, crab traps, boat trailers and work trucks — and a place where vehicles take a beating from salt air, wet docks and sandy shell lots. Firkins Collision Center has served Cortez and the rest of West Manatee for more than 20 years, and our shop at 2700 1st St in Bradenton is about as easy to reach as it gets: Cortez Road east, then a quick turn north on US-41.
What Makes Driving in Cortez Different
Cortez Road: the only road in and out
Cortez Road (SR-684) is the main artery for the village and the gateway to Bradenton Beach. From 119th Street West east through the 75th Street and 59th Street intersections, it carries island-bound traffic, local residents and commercial vehicles. Seasonal traffic from roughly January through April, plus summer weekends, can back up the road from the bridge to well inland. Sudden stops in those backups lead to rear-end collisions.
The Cortez Bridge project
The Cortez Bridge connecting the village to Bradenton Beach has been a drawbridge since the 1950s. Construction on a new high-level, fixed-span replacement began in 2026 and is expected to last several years, with traffic shifts in phases. Work zones, lane shifts and construction vehicles near the bridge approach call for extra care — and occasionally cause scrapes and sideswipes.
Work trucks, trailers and docks
Many Cortez residents tow boats or haul gear. Backing trailers down ramps, tight turns around fish houses and loading in narrow lots can lead to tailgate damage, crushed rear bumpers and dented quarter panels. Our bumper repair and dent repair services handle most of these.
Salt air and spray
Vehicles parked near the water in Cortez are exposed to salt spray almost every day. Once paint is chipped or scratched, salt can speed up corrosion on exposed metal. Fixing chips early with our scratch repair and auto painting services helps protect your vehicle. Our article on salt air and sun damage has more tips that apply here too.
Flooding and surge
Cortez sits barely above sea level, and recent hurricanes brought surge flooding into the village. Salt water can damage wiring, sensors and interiors quickly. If your vehicle took on water, don't try to start it. Have it towed and inspected. Our storm and flood damage page explains what to expect.

What We Repair for Cortez Drivers
We repair all makes and models, including the work trucks and SUVs that keep Cortez running. Our roughly 10,000-square-foot facility includes:
- Frame machines and computer-assisted measuring for structural damage — see frame straightening
- A dedicated paint booth with a waterborne paint system and careful color matching
- An on-site Mopar parts department for Ram, Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler vehicles
- I-CAR- and ASE-certified technicians with ongoing training
We use OEM parts whenever possible, and every repair is backed by our lifetime warranty on parts and labor.
Keeping a Work Truck on the Road
In a village where a truck is often how the day's catch gets to market, downtime costs money. We understand that, and we try to make the repair process as efficient as possible:
- Free upfront estimates so you know where you stand before you commit.
- Disassembly and inspection early in the process, so hidden damage is found and parts are ordered sooner rather than later.
- On-site Mopar parts for Ram and other Stellantis trucks, which can help when parts are needed.
- Free loaner vehicles or help arranging a rental so you're not without wheels.
- Progress updates throughout, so you can plan around the pickup date.
Minor repairs often take a few days. Significant damage may take several weeks depending on the extent and parts availability. We won't promise a turnaround we can't stand behind, but we'll keep you informed every step of the way. Read more about how long collision repair takes.
Heavy-duty use, trailer hitches and bed damage are all part of what we see. If a tailgate or bumper has taken repeated hits, ask whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
Caring for Fresh Paint in a Salt Environment
New paint needs time to cure. During the first 30 days, avoid washing (especially high-pressure washes), don't wax or polish, park away from trees and bushes, and remove bird droppings, tree sap and love bugs promptly. If you park near the water, consider parking farther from spray when possible while the finish cures.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get from Cortez to Firkins Collision Center?
Take Cortez Road (SR-684) east all the way to US-41 (1st Street), then turn north. Our shop is at 2700 1st St, a short distance up 1st Street. It's one of the most direct routes we have from any area we serve.
How will the Cortez Bridge construction affect my drive?
Construction on the new fixed-span Cortez Bridge began in 2026 and is expected to take several years, with traffic shifts in phases. If you live in Cortez, it mostly affects trips to and from the island, but expect extra congestion near the bridge approach on Cortez Road.
Can you repair damage from backing a boat trailer?
Yes. Trailer jackknifes and hitch bumps often damage rear bumpers, tailgates and quarter panels. We repair all makes of trucks and SUVs, and we'll check for hidden damage behind the bumper cover.
My truck's paint is fading and chipping from salt and sun. Can you fix it?
Yes. We can repair chips and scratches, refinish damaged panels and color-match them in our dedicated paint booth. Fixing chips before they reach bare metal helps keep corrosion from spreading in salt air.
Do you offer pickup in Cortez?
Yes. We offer complimentary pickup and delivery, along with free loaner vehicles or help arranging a rental.
